It became gloriously bubbly and the gruyere became slightly brown and crisp on top. hot french toasts croque monsieur and croque madame with slices of boiled ham, melted emmental cheese and fried sunny side up egg on a stone tray with. This could also be made the night before for an easy make ahead meal!Īfter it sat, I just baked the casserole for about 45 minutes. Once I assembled the croque monsieur casserole with lots of yummy gruyere on top, I let it sit for an hour so that the croissants could soak up all of the flavors. This egg mixture beautifully held the casserole all together. It always takes the sandwich to the next level and it did the same for the casserole. The flavor highlight was definitely the herbs de provence. After that, I quickly whisked together my egg mixture. It’s a huge part of any croque monsieur sandwich so I had to of obviously use it in this casserole version. I also whipped up a simple small batch of my favorite French mother sauce in the world, béchamel. I thought they would be more flaky and crispy in the casserole. Said bread base was a bunch of lovely, buttery croissants instead of the usual brioche. All of the yummy elements of the sandwich were there with the béchamel, ham and gruyere layered over the bread base. Enter this wonderful croque monsieur casserole! I made it almost like a french toast casserole with an egg mixture to bind everything. Usually it is easy to just make two for Marc and me, but this week I wanted to make them for a lunch crowd. Bake under the broiler for approximately 5 to 10 minutes, until the cheese bubbles and is browned. Pour over the cheese sauce and top with the remaining mozzarella. Spread Dijon over 4 of the slices, top each with slices of ham and some of the mozzarella. Place slices of toasted bread on a lined, rimmed baking sheet.Return the saucepan to medium heat and stir until the cheese is melted, approximately 3 minutes.Stir in nutmeg, half of the mozzarella and all of the Gruyere and Parmesan. Remove from heat and season with salt and pepper. Stir until the sauce is thickened, approximately 3 minutes. Pour the warm milk into the flour mixture, breaking up any lumps that appear. At the same time, in a separate saucepan over medium heat, warm the milk. Add in the flour, stirring with a wooden spoon continuously until smooth. In a medium saucepan, melt butter over medium heat.Give me a lifetime supply of these and I am pretty sure I would die a happy girl! There is just endless happiness wrapped up in this lovely little croque monsieur. Oh and did I mention that this is a pretty darn cheap meal to make? WIN! I mean cheese between the slices, smothering the whole sandwich in cheese sauce, and then cheese on top of all of that, broiled until bubbly and brown. The level of cheese in this sandwich is insane. Of course there is no way that a sandwich literally smothered in cheese could be bad… All I can say is, this is HANDS DOWN the best sandwich I have ever eaten in my entire life. I had seen pictures and heard rave reviews, but have never actually tasted it. I suspect this planned movie was an adaptation of a series of novels by Émile Gaboriau (1832-1873) who published, among other works, a series of police novels, with a detective named Monsieur Lecoq. I wasn’t 100% sure what to expect with this sandwich. The one I tested was perfect. And they thought about offering two vegetarian recipes which is very cool. ![]() 'The choice is quite varied and the recipes interesting in terms of taste. Tell me you have seen It’s Complicated because if you haven’t you need to watch it. Coq Monsieur Nantes, France 6 Rue Beauregard Recommended by Camille Lessieux and 1 other food critic. I think it is also the one movie I actually enjoy Alec Baldwin in too…. glamorous, gorgeous, talented, fabulous… One of my all time fav movies with Meryl Streep is It’s Complicated. So the decision to make this may or may not have come from a Meryl Streep movie….
